The ipod nano has changed dramatically since first introduced in 2005. So it is no wonder every ipod nano manual is about to have a complete makeover to describe the new and exciting ipod nano features.

Is the ipod nano manual as thin as the ipod nano?

You can watch videos
Previous models of ipod nano couldn’t only play music, so this is a big improvement. With a 2 inch display, the 8GB ipod nano can hold up to 8 hours of videos.

Enhaced interface
The new operating systems comes with the split-screen menus, and of course the famous cover flow. All the ipod nano beginners out there should rest a sure their ipod nano manual will cover the cover flow with great detail. It is very cool!

Redesigned look
Would you believe the new ipod nano is only 6.5mm thin? And its full aluminum cover and stainless steel polish gives it such a slick look!

There is no doubt the new ipod nano is a great combination for who ever wants to combine a very small device with still powerful capabilities. However since operating these new features is not always easy for new ipod users, more people are likely to search for a good and detailed ipod nano manual.

  2. jorge Says:

    thank you

  3. ipod manual Says:

It’s too bad you don’t know japanese :-)

You need to reset the language settings.

If you have a 3rd generation ipod nano (released Sep 2007) do as follows:
    1. Press and hold the Menu button until the main menu appears.
    2. Select the sixth menu item (which is Settings).
    3. Select the last menu item (which is Reset Settings).
    4. Select the left item (which is Reset).
    5. Select the language you prefer.

If you have a 2nd generation ipod nano (released Sep 2006) do as follows:
    1. Press and hold the Menu button until the main menu appears.
    2. Select the fifth menu item (which is Settings).
    3. Select the last menu item (which is Reset All Settings).
    4. Select the second menu item (which is Reset).
    5. Select the language you prefer.

Bare in mind some other settings might be reset as well, but I guess that’s still better than having everything in japanese…

  4. Vicki Hawse Says:

This website is misleading. I just bought a nano and would like to find a straightforward manual. What the features are and how to use them. The instructions in the box were extremely minimal. Please direct me to the real manual and not individual responses. Thanks

  5. ipod manual Says:

    Dear Vicki,
We have no intentions of misleading.

As a matter of fact we’re working on them as I write this.

  6. brandon simonini Says:

I have accidently hit screen lock and I don’t know my password how do I fix this

  7. ipod manual Says:

    Hi Brandon.
You are in a bit of trouble, aren’t you? :-)

Are you positive you can’t remember the password?

First of all, try connecting the ipod to your computer. The ipod is supposed to unlock when connected to a computer its authorized to work with.

If that doesn’t work, you’ll have to restore your ipod back to its factory settings. That means it’s going to go back to its state when you just took it out of the box.

You don’t have to worry about your content, because you’ll just sync it from itunes. But if you changed any settings on the ipod itself, they will be reset.

To restore your ipod nano, do the following:
    1. Connect your ipod to the computer, and make sure the internet connection is on.
    2. In iTunes, select your ipod nano from the device list.
    3. Select the “summary” tab.
    4. Click “restore”.
    5. itunes will download the ipod software (this might be a big file, so it may take a while! please wait paitently) and install it on your ipod.

If sync doesn’t start automatically, sync your ipod, and you are ready to go!

    Good luck.

  8. Patricia Waters Says:

Is there any way to set my ipod nano so that it doesn’t automatically sync and download all the songs on a computer. I use my ipod with two difference computers, one at home and one at work. I want to put certain songs from my work computer on my ipod, but i would like to do so without erasing the songs that I have downloaded from my home computer. Is there some sort of manual setting that allows me to choose the songs I want downloaded onto my ipod from my work computer?

  9. ipod manual Says:

    Hi Patricia.

    It’s your lucky day!
There is a way to for you to work with 2 computers, as longs as they are both PCs, or both Macs.

What you need to do is change the work mode of your ipod nano from “automatic” to “manual”. That means itunes will no longer sync your ipod once its connected to any of your computers. You can choose which iteams to sync.

    Do the following:
    1. Connect your ipod nano to your “first” computer and open the itunes windows.
    2. If you get a popup asking to erase the ipod contents and sync the local itunes library - answer “no” or “cancel”.
    3. Select your ipod from the side bar.
    4. Select the summary tab.
    5. Check the “manually manage music and videos” option.
    6. Click “Apply”

Now in order to add iteams to your ipod, just drag them from any playlist or folder onto the ipod icon in the sidebar.
If you click on the little triangle next the ipod icon in the side bar, you’ll get a list of all the folders in your ipod, and you can manage and delete anything you want.

    Good luck!

  10. Jesus Says:

I want to put music on my ipod but when i put it from the computer i cant see it on the ipod. Why?

  11. ipod manual Says:

    Hi Jesus.
    Cool name :-)
You probably want to put some heavinly music on your ipod…

How are you transferring the music file from the computer to the ipod?
You have to use itunes in order to do.
You can download it for free from here.

  12. Rudiboyce Says:

my i pod is stuck on NOW PLAYING cant exit cant do anything HELP

  13. ipod manual dude Says:

    Hi Rudi.

    That sounds like a bummer!

You can try reseting your ipod nano:
1 Move the hold switch to on and then back to off.
2 Press and hold both the menu and the center buttons for at least 6 seconds. If the ipod was reset, the apple logo will appear.

If that did work, try restoring the ipod nano software to its original factory settings (this will erase any media the ipod had, but you can resync it from itunes):
To restore your ipod nano, do the following:
    1. Connect your ipod to the computer, and make sure the internet connection is on.
    2. In iTunes, select your ipod nano from the device list.
    3. Select the “summary” tab.
    4. Click “restore”.
    5. itunes will download the ipod software (this might be a big file, so it may take a while! please wait paitently) and install it on your ipod.

If sync doesn’t start automatically, sync your ipod, and you are ready to go!

Hope this helps! And if it doesn’t I suggest you go to an apple store and ask there.

  14. Andersen Says:

I saw my friend he had pictures of the band i think and i have no idea how to do it but its not the slideshow thing can anyone help pls?

  15. ipod manual dude Says:

    Hi Andersen.

Is your friend using an ipod nano or the ipod touch?
He could have just viewed a single photo without a slideshow.
Or if he was using the ipod touch, he could have set a photo as the ipod’s wallpaper, or maybe browse to the band’s website.

  16. Steve Says:

I just bought my daughter an ipod nano 4GB. When we hooked it up to the computer, no set-up assistant appeared. It appears to be charging. this has gone on for over an hour now. Is this normal?

I have an IPod Nano (3rd gen) and would like to listen to it at work. I’ve connected to my work computer and I am managing manually. It looks as if the music is playing on the ipod, however, there is no sound coming from the speakers. I checked the speakers and they do work and are turned up. Any suggestions?

  32. ipod manual dude Says:

    Hi Gina.

I’m happy you asked this question, because your problem is exactly the first one we’re covering in the “troubleshooting” section in our ipod nano video guides.

  40. ipod manual dude Says:

Hi relax. I like your nickname :-)

The syncing process is done according to the syncing settings. And there are different settings for each content type.

You can see a detailed example of automatically and manually syncing your ipod nano in our itunes video guides under these sections:
    # How to automatically sync (move content) your iPod and your iTunes library
    # How to manually add content to your iPod

Another option might be: there is not enough free space for the movie.

    Paul.

  41. Caitlyn Says:

How do I erase songs off of my Ipod nano, but not off of itunes?? i need help!

  42. ipod manual dude Says:

    Hi Caitlyn.
Don’t worry. Help is on the way!

Everything comes down to your syncing settings. You can sync automatically, manually, everything, specific playlists, specific folders, content you’ve watched before, or only recent ones. As I said, the syncing setting controls it all.

One simple solution to your question is actually explained in the first 2 minutes of our “Syncing iTunes with our iPod” video in our itunes and ipod nano video guides. So feel free to check them out.

    Paul.

  43. jan Says:

I charge my ipod and it loses its charge while sitting around for a few days? I think I’m turning it off correctly? Shouldn’t it hold a charge unless I’m using it?

  44. ipod manual dude Says:

When fully charged and not being used, the ipod can last more than 2 weeks, sometimes even more.
It uses a bit of the battery life even when not used.

Try switching the hold button to the hold position, that should help too.

  45. Anna Says:

Hi there could you guys help me I can’t seem to make heads or tails when adjusting the volume limit settings. Can anyone help me?

  46. ipod manual dude Says:

    Hi Anna,

    Eran.

  47. Amy Says:

On my apple i-pod nano when i watch a movie/video it has no sound and when i play a regular song it does have sound… can you please help?

  48. ipod manual dude Says:

I suggest you test both the song and the video on itunes first and check the volume there.

Test different videos to make sure this is not the video’s fault.

  49. ipod manual dude Says:

    Hi Maz.

It can be easily done via the “Date&Time” settings.
You can see a detailed video on how to do it in our video guides under the settings section.

  50. Maz Says:

How do you change the date and time on the nano?

  51. bob Says:

how do you put Pics on your pod

  52. ipod manual dude Says:

    Hi Bob,

Any content you want to view on your ipod needs to go through:
    1. Downloading it or placing it on your computer.
    2. Set the ipod’s sync settings from itunes to your ipod to include the wanted content, and actually syncing it.
    3. Viewing it using the ipod.

Same goes for photos. Place on the computer. Update the ipod’s sync settings to include them, sync, and watch using the “photos”" menu.

You can watch step-by-step videos that show everything in detail in our itunes and ipod nano video guides.

    Hope this help.

  53. Michael Berke Says:

When I try and use my Nano in my car, it works but on many of my itunes download - some transferred from cd to itunes, and others direct download - the volume only goes to an unacceptable level.

  54. ipod manual dude Says:

    Hi Michael.

This might help, worth trying out:
    Use the “sound check” option.
You need to enable it in the iTunes Edit->Preferences Menu,
and in the ipod nano settings.

    Paul.
